Treatments for medical conditions can be invasive, so patients should be able to decide, based on known risks of their body, how it will be treated. In other instances patients may not be able to effectively communicate their decisions to the health professionals. In these situations the patient is considered to not possess adequate capacity for decision-making. A family member or court-appointed representative, could then be able to make informed consent on behalf of the patient.
Patients that are strongly influenced by their emotions, such as anxiety or fear for instance can be deemed to not having the capacity for decision-making. People who are not conscious cannot make decisions on independent of themselves, so outsiders have to give consent for treatment instead.

Alternative treatments are also offered, as are their benefits and risks
