Patients who are influenced by their emotions, like anxiety or fear, for instance – may be determined as not having the capacity to make decisions. People who are not conscious cannot take decisions on their independently, and other people require consent for treatment instead.

Certain elements are included on all informed consent forms:
The patient’s medical diagnosis/condition
The recommended treatment is suggested by the physician who is acting
The risks and advantages associated with this method of treatment
Alternative treatments are readily available, as well as their risks and benefits
The dangers and advantages with refusing any treatment whatsoever
