Photo Consent FormEvery person should be able to make educated decisions about their health. Medical treatments can be demanding, and therefore patients should be able decide the risks that are known to be present that their bodies should be treated. Therefore, before medical workers are allowed to be able to treat their patients, they need to receive what is known as informed consent.

Informed consent is a legal condition where a patient is provided with a full and complete description of his or her physical health and the treatment suggested by the doctor in charge. After receiving this information the patient must offer the physician consent to treat before any form of treatment is delivered. Without the patient’s informed consent health care professional cannot offer treatments.

Decision Making Capacity

In some instances patients may not have the capabilities to fully understand their treatment options and the potential risks and benefits associated with each one. In other situations, patients may not be able to effectively communicate their decisions to the health professionals. Under these circumstances, the patient is said to not possess adequate capacity to make decisions. Family members or a court-appointed representative can make informed consent on behalf of the patient.

Patients who are heavily influenced by their emotions – such as anxiety or fear for instance are deemed not having the capacity to make decisions. The patients who are unconscious cannot take decisions on their independent of themselves, so outsiders are required to obtain consent instead.
