Photo Use Consent FormEverybody should be able to make educated decisions about their medical care. Medical procedures can be invasive, so patients should be able decide from the facts about risks of their body, how it will be treated. In order to ensure that medical professionals are allowed to administer treatments to patients, they need to receive the so-called informed consent.

Informed consent constitutes a lawful condition that requires that a patient be provided with specific information regarding the condition of their body and the treatment suggested by the doctor in charge. After receiving this information the patient is required to sign a consent form with the doctor to treat before any form of care is given. Without the patient’s informed consent the health professional cannot provide treatments.

Decision Making Capacity

In some cases patients may not have the skills to comprehend their options regarding treatment, and the risks/benefits of each. In other cases patients may not be able to effectively communicate their decision to health professionals. In these situations it is believed that the patient to lack the necessary capacity to make decisions. Family members or a court-appointed representative, can take over informed consent.

Patients who are strongly affected by their emotions, such as anxiety or fear, for instance – may be determined as not possessing decision making capacity. People who are not conscious are unable to make decisions on their independent of themselves, so outsiders have to give consent for treatment instead.

There are certain elements that are common to all consent forms:

The patient’s medical conditions/diagnosis

The treatment that is recommended by the doctor in charge

The risks and the benefits associated with this treatment

Alternative treatments that are available, as well as their potential risks and benefits

The benefits and risks associated with not accepting any treatment whatsoever

Not only should these details be documented, but they must also been discussed by the patient. This way, he or she will fully understand the details of the situation and will receive immediate responses to any questions that may arise.
