Medical procedures can be risky, therefore patients should be able to decide from the facts about risks and the way their bodies will be treated. Thus, before medical personnel can provide treatment to patients they must receive what is known as informed consent.
Informed consent is a legal condition that requires that a patient be provided with detailed information about his or her physical condition and the treatment suggested by the treating physician. After receiving this information the patient must provide the physician with consent to treat before any form of treatment can be provided. Without informed consent from the patient an health care professional cannot provide treatment.

In other cases, patients may not be able communicate their choices to health care professionals. If this happens it is believed that the patient to not possess adequate capacity to make decisions. The family member, or court-appointed representative, can perform informed consent instead.
Patients who are greatly influenced by their emotions, like anxiety or fear for instance are deemed not having the capacity to make decisions. The ones who are asleep clearly cannot take decisions on their independently, and other people must provide consent for treatment instead.
